Engaged: Brittany & Derek, Newport, Kentucky Engagement Photography

Brittany & Derek have a most unique set of engagement photographs. It’s because Derek decided to propose in such a unique way- at the Newport Aquarium! We drove up to Newport for their engagement session, after the aquarium had closed. I could tell from the beginning of our time together Derek was just smitten with Brittany. They are perfect together.  I had Brittany write a few words on how the proposal unfolded:

“Derek and I met in college through mutual friends. After a few years together, I began to get anxious, as most girls do, for a proposal. I had known Derek was the one for a very long time and began wondering what was standing in the way. How much more perfect could this all get? Derek is a very calculative, planning type of person who is never in a rush and wants to make sure everything will be a 100% success, in business and in life. This is one of the many things I love about him because it makes him intelligent, sound and secure. I knew (well, at least I thought I knew) that Derek was not ready for the next big step; that was okay, I could wait on someone so amazing. However, Derek had been manipulating me! But, in a good way!

On June 4th, 2011 Derek and I planned a trip outside of Cincinnati to visit with his Nana. Derek also wanted to go to the Newport Aquarium during the visit. I protested, as I would have rather gone to the Cincinnati Zoo, but I never questioned the fact that Derek completely dismissed my idea. So, the aquarium it was. As soon as we arrived at the aquarium, Derek wanted to see the “Shark Show”. So quickly? We hadn’t even looked around! During the show, I began to take pictures. Derek said he wasn’t sure if I was allowed to use flash and casually walked to the front to ask an attendant. Little did I know, he was verifying our arrival for a very important reason! After the show was over, a photographer working for the aquarium asked if she could take our picture in front of the tank. AWESOME! I thought. We are going to be featured in a brochure. The aquarium worker then directed my attention to the tank by acting astonished by a stingray. When I turned around, a diver was holding a sign “Brittany, will you marry me?” The first thing I thought? Oh cool, who is Brittany?

When I turned around, Derek was on one knee with the most perfect ring in the world! I was in shock! This wasn’t supposed to happen! He wasn’t ready to propose! Derek had been preparing for months, asking my family, telling his family and picking out a ring that I couldn’t have done a better job selecting myself. My proposal was a total surprise, and I wouldn’t have it any other way! I am so blessed to be marrying my best friend!”
